The Dundee Congress started life in 2004 as a re-birth of Dundee Congress, which had been inactive since 1994. A couple of local players felt it was time for a congress to return to Dundee, gathered a few reluctant bodies together and persuaded said bodies to run at least one event.
The first outing took place at the Queens Hotel in Dundee with a pleasing initial entry of 124 and very encouraging reviews. For 2005, though, the hire fee quoted by the Queens was simply unaffordable, so we had to look elsewhere. We were aware of the facilities at what was then Next Generation Club near Monifieth; terms were favourable and enhancements available, the managers were supportive, so there we went. This became a very popular venue, evidenced by regular complimentary feedback. Until 2016, when the terms changed. Affordable venues could not be found in 2017, so this was a fallow year. In 2018, the Chaplaincy Centre of Dundee University became an option. Castlehill CC had been meeting here since 2016, and through this connection, the Congress came to the Chaplaincy.
We decided from the outset that we would run an event to attract as many players as possible without regard to strength. It is also our belief that everyone who takes part should contribute to the costs, including the prize fund, and so we do not offer free entry to titled players who are the very people most likely to take most money (in the Open/Premier, anyway). That’s no insult or disrespect to them, just an expectation of a fair share of contributions and any titled entry will be as welcome as any other.
